Frequently asked questions
Do you charge for an estimate / to come out?
Estimates are completely free — we come look at your space, talk through the design, and give you the exact price before any work is done.
How much does a deck cost?
It depends on the size, the height, and whether it's wood or composite, so we look at your space and give you the exact price up front — and the estimate is free.
How soon can you build / how long does it take?
We schedule estimates quickly, and most decks take a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the size — we'll give you a clear timeline once we've seen the space.
Wood or composite — which is better?
Both are great — wood costs less up front and composite needs almost no maintenance and lasts longer. The builder will walk you through which fits your budget and how you'll use the deck.
My railing is loose / wobbly — can you fix it?
Yes — and please don't lean on it, especially if the deck is raised. We'll get someone out to re-secure it safely, and the estimate is free.
My deck boards are rotted / soft — can you replace them?
We do — please keep off any spot that feels soft, and we'll come look at whether it's a few boards or more, and give you the exact price for free.
Can you refinish / restain my weathered deck?
Absolutely — cleaning, sanding, and re-staining or sealing a weathered deck is common work for us and really extends its life. The estimate is free.
Can you build stairs or a multi-level deck?
Yes — stairs and multi-level decks are right in our wheelhouse. Tell me a bit about the space and we'll come design it with you.
Do you install pergolas or deck lighting?
We do — pergolas, lighting, and other upgrades, whether it's a new deck or an addition to your existing one. We'll go over the options at the estimate.
Do you handle permits?
Yes — most new decks need a permit and inspection, and we handle that as part of the project. We'll walk you through what yours needs.
Do you do commercial decks / patios?
We do — commercial and multi-unit decks as well as homes. Tell me about the project and we'll set up a visit.
What's your warranty / guarantee?
We stand behind our work — the builder will go over the exact warranty on the materials and construction when they come out.
Do you offer financing?
That's a good question — let me have the office confirm the current payment options and we'll go over them with you.
Do you service my area?
We're local and cover your area — I'll grab your address and set up a free estimate.
⚠️ Safety first
- Raised deck feels unstable, bouncy, or is pulling away from the house: Let's be safe about this — please keep everyone off the deck for now, especially since it's raised, and don't put any weight or a crowd on it. We'll get someone out to inspect it as a priority.
- A railing or stair is loose on a raised deck: Please don't lean on that railing and keep kids away from it — a loose railing on a raised deck is a real fall risk. We'll get a technician out to secure it safely.
- Part of the deck has collapsed or a board gave way: Please keep everyone off the deck and clear of the area, and if anyone is hurt call 911 first. We'll get someone out right away to look at it.
- Deck lighting or wiring is sparking or exposed: Please keep away from it and, if you can safely reach the breaker, shut off power to the deck lighting, then call us. If it's sparking or you smell burning, call 911.
Know the terms
- Ledger board
- The board that attaches the deck to the house; it must be bolted and flashed correctly for safety.
- Footings
- The concrete piers under the deck posts, dug deep enough not to heave in winter.
- Composite / PVC decking
- Low-maintenance man-made decking that resists rot and fading, like Trex or TimberTech.
- Joists
- The framing boards under the decking that carry the load.
- Baluster spacing
- The gap between railing pickets, kept small by code so a child can't slip through.
- Refinishing / restoration
- Cleaning, sanding, and re-staining or sealing a weathered wood deck.
